Description
Introduction. Tonica is a Japanese piano brand built by Atlas. This Japanese company started out in the early 1950s in collaboration with the Tokyo National Conservatory and a group of European designers as a research project in how to build good pianos. They eventually set up a factory in Hamamasu, a city famous as home to Yamaha and Kawai. Atlas pianos became popular in educational institutions throughout Japan and many pianos were also exported. From 1986 plans were developed to open a factory in China. Tonica, we understand is a sub-brand belonging to Atlas.
The Piano. The Tonica pictured here has very similar dimensions to the Yamaha U1. It is very much a Japanese piano, beautifully built and with that clear sound from the upper registers and lovely rich bass, this piano really does have a beautifully rich bass! The cabinet is nice and simple in design with a high gloss finish. The action is nice and precise, relatively light, but with enough resistance. This instrument is from around 1985 and is a very recomendable piano, we are really rather taken by it.
The Tonica measures at 123cm tall, 151.5cm long and 63cm deep. It has 88 keys and 3 pedals.
