Introduction. Bentley pianos can trace its roots to 1830 in London producing 500 instruments annually. Douglas Grover moved his business and workers to the Cotswolds in 1911. The company was now known as the Stroud Piano Co. Ltd. Production grew through the 1920s and in 1930 his son Richard joined the company. He brought a new overstrung design and sold these pianos with the Bentley name. They were self-sufficient, making their own parts and became a major producer making in excess of 3000 pianos per year. Production switched to help the war effort in 1939 and post-war emphasis was towards developing export markets. This was a forward looking company with a flurry of new designs through the next decades winning awards for their work. In 1993 Bentley was acquired by Whelpdale Maxwell & Codd and production moved to different factories. In 2003 the company went into voluntary liquidation.
