Musical instruments are expensive. This is a simple fact and the reasons are fairly straight forward. Pianos for example are the most complicated of instruments by having 1000’s of moving parts which have to work perfectly. Their construction and manufacture process is very complicated and labour intensive, all adding to the cost. When searching for a piano for your home, renting may be a route worth considering.
An excellent quality string instrument improves with age as the wood matures, the same cannot be said for pianos, brass or woodwind instruments. The moving parts simply wear out over time. Also, modern manufacturing techniques and many refinements in design means that modern pianos, brass and woodwind instruments are far superior than their predecessors.
It has been said that the best instruments should go to children, beginners and those first learning their craft. A professional musician can make anything sound good, but for the beginner to be able to make the same sorts of sounds isn’t as easy. It takes time!
A poorly functioning instrument only stores up problems and difficult to break bad habits as the pupil tries to accommodate the quirks of that instrument.
Playing on a quality instrument helps to motivate and enthuse which in turn will inspire pupils to continue. Having an instrument which sounds excellent will help develop their ear and if the action of the piano works properly a pupil will have a better chance of developing a good technique.
However, the reality of life doesn’t often allow the beginner pupil to have a perfect piano.
It is difficult for parents. They very much want to do the best for their child and get the best piano possible. The problem lies in not knowing how their son or daughter will take to the piano. As I have outlined above, even cheap pianos aren’t cheap. Renting an instrument can provide a cost effective way of getting decent instruments to aspiring young pianists. It is a great way of getting started and see if your son or daughter takes to their chosen instrument. This will get your son or daughter started until they get advanced enough to have their very own piano.
